Chinese defence attaché arrives in Namibia

China's defence attaché to Namibia, Colonel Li Shujun, made his maiden address on Tuesday evening during an event attended by prominent figures in the security cluster.

These guests included Namibian Correctional Service Commissioner-General Raphael Hamunyela, Major General Aktofel Nambahu of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) and former NDF chief Lieutenant General Martin Shalli.

Li expressed his gratitude for being assigned to Namibia, noting the country's reputation as the Land of the Brave.

He also noted his initial impressions and the enduring friendship between China and Namibia, as well as the commonalities between the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the NDF.

“Before I arrived here one month ago, when I searched on the internet to get some impression of this country, three keywords appeared most frequently: One of the most beautiful countries in Africa, a must-visit travel destination, and a traditional friend of China. After one month living here, I found out the internet was telling the truth," he said, adding: "I was surprised by the landscape and the order of the society".

Li further outlined China's commitment to peaceful development, active defence and safeguarding national sovereignty and security, and emphasised the PLA's dedication to regional and global security cooperation as well as China's role in United Nations peacekeeping operations and bilateral security partnerships.

Pointing out parallels between Namibia's independence anniversary and China's commitment to sovereignty, he stressed the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between independent nations.
