Sports law lecturer: Kirby Claasen

Kirby Claasen is a legal studies lecturer at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), where she teaches commercial law, hotel and tourism law and sports law.

Claasen employs a blended teaching method that combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online resources and activities. This approach creates a dynamic and interactive learning environment, catering to various learning styles, she said. She integrates case studies and real-life examples from the sports industry, helping students connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

Engaging students through discussions and simulations of legal scenarios in sports also fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

"Using real-life examples makes the lessons more relatable and engaging for the students," she said.

To motivate and inspire her students, Claasen emphasises the real-world relevance of sports law.

By highlighting how legal knowledge can protect their interests, especially concerning sports contracts and delictual claims, she instills a sense of purpose and empowerment. Encouraging students to actively participate in class and engage in sports activities helps them see the direct benefits of their studies, she said.

"When students see the practical applications of what they learn, it motivates them to engage more deeply with the material."

Students often face challenges such as balancing their academic responsibilities with sports commitments and understanding complex legal concepts. Claasen helps them overcome these obstacles by offering flexible learning options and providing clear, simplified explanations of legal principles. Regular feedback and one-on-one consultations ensure that students stay on track and feel supported throughout their academic journey. "It's important to provide students with the support they need to succeed, both academically and personally."

While Claasen is not directly involved in research projects related to sports law, her primary research interests lie in trusts, estate planning and the law of succession. These areas, though not directly linked to sports law, hold significant value for sports professionals. Understanding these legal fields can help athletes manage their wealth and plan for their future effectively.

To stay abreast of the latest trends and developments in sports education and law, she regularly reads sports articles in newspapers and follows sports news on radio and television. Additionally, she continuously reads educational materials related to the legal aspects of sports, ensuring that her knowledge and teaching methods remain current and relevant.

Claasen's work as a sports law lecturer profoundly impacts her students by equipping them with essential legal knowledge and creating awareness about their rights and obligations in sports. This education is crucial in helping them navigate their careers with confidence and security.
