Nedbank coastal kapana cook-off kicks off
Laura Egumbo, Veueza Kasemba and Rivaldo Pietersen emerged as the winners of the Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off competition's preliminary coastal round on Saturday at Dunes Mall in Walvis Bay.
The winners will advance to the finals against competitors from the central and northern regions. Kasemba, who took part for the first time, said she knew that she would take the win. "Hopefully I win the finals as well so that I can expand my business to make it even bigger than it is right now".
Pietersen said it was an exciting experience, claiming he wasn’t prepared. "I basically just woke up, came here, and decided to compete".
NedBank’s Gernot de Klerk explained that the competition comprises two categories: amateur and professional.
"The professional chefs will compete against each other on 4 August in Windhoek. They will be followed by the amateur chefs, who will compete on 5 August. After that, we will travel to Ongwediva to attend the Ongwediva trade fair on 26 and 27 August."
Empowerment and support
De Klerk said the competition aims to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
"This event is really about the development of the Namibian kapana as well as equipping the kapana braaiers with the necessary skills. Ultimately, we wish to see kapana on the menus of restaurants across the country.”
The first-place winners will walk away with a brand new mobile kapana kitchen trailer to the value of N$100 000, a Nedbank account worth N$10 000 and a Bakpro voucher to the value of N$5 000.
The second-place winners will win a Nedbank account with N$7 000 and a Bakpro vetkoek voucher to the value of N$3 000. Third-place winners will win a Nedbank account with N$5 000 as well as a Bakpro vetkoek voucher to the value of N$2 000.
