Constitution Day commemorated on Sunday
Namibia’s Constitution Day is observed on 9 February to commemorate the adoption of the country's constitution in 1990.
This historic document laid the foundation for Namibia’s independence from South African rule. The constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly and adopted unanimously, reflecting Namibia's commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Recognised as one of the most progressive constitutions in Africa, it protects fundamental freedoms, including equality, freedom of expression and the protection of human dignity. It also establishes Namibia as a unitary, democratic and secular state.
A key feature is its strong stance on environmental protection.
While not a public holiday, Constitution Day honours the democratic values enshrined in our supreme law and reinforces the government’s collective commitment to justice, peace and national unity.
