Rivers flow, vehicles swept away
South of Namibia blessed with rains
More rains are expected, authorities say.
This past weekend, widespread and heavy rainfall resulted in several rivers flowing strongly and dam levels rising.
In the southern, south-western, north-western and western parts of the country, vehicles had to wait at overflowing rivers, and several roads were washed away. Once again, multiple reports were received of vehicles attempting to cross rivers and being swept away.
A four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying six army soldiers was swept away in the Aub River, about 10 km outside Keetmanshoop on the Aroab gravel road. According to reports, a farmer rushed to their aid and pulled them to safety with a rope. The road between Aroab and Keetmanshoop was also severely damaged.
The Tsauchab River reached the Sesriem Canyon, and at Agama Lodge on the C19 road, tourists had to turn back to Solitaire, blocked by roiling waters.
In the north-west, the C40 road between Kamanjab and Palmwag was washed away, as was the C39 road between Khorixas and Bergsig, with the Huar River in flood. The Kat River near Uis also flowed after 55 mm of rain over three days, where a bakkie was also swept away.
With the Swakop River on its way to the coast, attracting visitors eager to witness the spectacle, Goanikontes could only be accessed via the D1991 road.

The deep south was also blessed with good showers. As of Monday, on the farm Alt Duwisib, 95 km south-west of Maltahöhe, 63 mm of rain was recorded. In the typically dry Aroab area, 45 mm was reported, along with 21 mm on Toulon farm, 25 km north of Aroab. The farm Vaalpan, 70 km southeast of Koës, received 20 mm. Some parts of the Kalahari Desert remain very dry, but the farm Neumark in the Blumfelde area is grateful for the 28 mm it received.
In the north-west, the Brandberg Rest Camp recorded 55 mm over three days. In the Kamanjab and Fransfontein area, the following rainfall figures were reported on farms: Weerlig 60 mm, Westfallen 46 mm, Blydskap and Etusis 25 mm, and Mount Hohenfels 8 mm.
Farm Libertas, 70 km outside Outjo on the way to Khorixas, received 40 mm, while farm Belalaika, also in the Outjo district, recorded 26 mm, bringing its seasonal total to 280 mm. The plots at Otavifontein received 30 mm, with a cumulative total of 634 mm for the season.
Meanwhile, seven dams have received inflow, bringing the country's combined dam level to 57.8%, compared to 55.4% at the same time last year.
