LAC wildlife competition winners announced
News in short
The Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) yesterday announced the winners of its 2023 wildlife crime comic competition, with two schools from the Oshikoto Region emerging victorious.
Ontana Combined School’s Naftal Amupolo entered a comic titled ‘Water smuggling: The borehole water business councillor’, which earned him the top prize of N$30 000. In second place, Onguti Senior Secondary School learners Edward David and Johannes Jonas won a cool N$15 000 for their comic ‘Illegal fishing’.
Windhoek-based Delta Secondary School bagged the third prize with a comic titled ‘Save the Pangolins’, produced by the school’s EcoClub, winning N$5 000.
LAC director Toni Hancox said: “I want to congratulate the winning schools. I am very happy about the quality of entries received overall. We have seen a big improvement when compared to last year’s entries and it gives me great hope that our learners are indeed advancing in environmental education”.
The LAC received 53 entries from 28 schools, representing 10 regions. A wide area of topics were covered by the comics entered. The themes included poaching, illegal wildlife trade, illegal fishing, illegal dumping of waste in the ocean, water pollution, illegal sand mining, deforestation, illegal fires and littering.
The winning comics were selected based on originality, art, character, storyline and the presence of any legal components.
