#JustIn: Two more cheetah cubs die in India
Two more cheetah cubs from Namibian descent have died at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh in India, according to the newspaper, The Hindu.
This brings the total cub deaths to three. The first one died on Tuesday. The last remaining cub, Jwala, is underweight and under observation, The Hindu reported.
Approached for comment, environment minister Pohamba Shifeta told Namibian Sun that he wasn’t aware of the latest deaths. He will wait for a report on the matter before responding.
Three adult cheetahs have died since 20 of the animals were relocated from Namibia and South Africa respectively to the park, in an experiment at establishing a community of cheetahs, the only large cat to have gone extinct in India.
According to The Hindu, the extreme heat and the lack of adequate nutrition have likely contributed to the deaths, experts associated with the cheetah reintroduction project said.
