JUST IN: Another Namibian cheetah dies in India
Another cheetah translocated from Namibia to India has died.
The cheetah - found dead in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park this morning - brings the death toll at the park to nine.
It is suspected that the cheetah died of “septicaemia due to skin abrasion”, but this will be confirmed after a post-mortem.
A total of 20 cheetahs from South Africa (12) and Namibia (eight) were translocated to the park in Madhya Pradesh in 2022 - more than 70 years after the animals were declared extinct in that country.
Before this morning, eight cheetahs - one Namibian adult and three of the four Namibian cubs - had died. The other deaths were South African adult cheetahs.
