Farewell to Sammy the giraffe, Namibia’s beloved ‘gentle giant’
Heartbreak has struck Omaruru Game Lodge with the death of Sammy, the famed giraffe who was more than just a wildlife attraction.
Sammy’s life was mysteriously cut short on Saturday, and although there were reports that it could have been due to a fatal black-mamba bite, this could not be verified yet.
Affectionately known as "the gentle giant", Sammy was cherished for his calm, trusting nature and his unique bond with humans. He became a symbol of joy, delighting countless visitors with his playful curiosity – licking faces, peering over shoulders, and creating unforgettable moments.
Omaruru Game Lodge released a statement on Sunday, mourning his loss: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved giraffe, Sammy. He touched the lives of so many, bringing joy and laughter to all who had the privilege of meeting him. His sweet and quirky nature never failed to put a smile on people’s faces, making every encounter with him truly special.”
They further stated that “Sammy brought us endless happiness, and his presence will be deeply missed. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created will live on in our hearts.”
Tributes poured in over the weekend, with social media flooded with fond memories and heartfelt condolences.
“Beautiful memories, so sad,” wrote Tanja Liebenberg, while many shared photos of their encounters with Sammy, expressing their devastation at his passing.
Wildlife enthusiast Kyle Hume captured the collective sense of loss, writing: “Namibia’s tourism has lost something truly special – a beloved wildlife ambassador who reminded us of the beauty of connection and trust between humans and nature.”
