Welwitchia Health Training Centre, a prominent private institute for higher learning in Namibia, has officially transitioned to university status, marking a significant milestone in the country’s educational landscape.The announcement was made during a media and stakeholder engagement held late last week at the city campus in Windhoek.Founded in 2013, Welwitchia Health Training Centre has been renowned for its focus on health-related programmes, contributing significantly to the healthcare sector in Namibia.However, with its new status as Welwitchia University, the institution is poised to broaden its academic horizons. The deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Marius Hedimbi, highlighted the strategic shift.“It is time for us to expand our horizons and diversify our academic offerings. The change to university status will allow us to offer a wide range of courses and qualifications beyond the health science fields, ensuring that our students have access to comprehensive and multifaceted academic programmes.”This milestone elevates the institution to the ranks of the country&#039;s most esteemed higher learning establishments, marking it as the second private university in Namibia along with the International University of Management, underscoring a pivotal shift in the educational opportunities available to Namibian students.International recognition The transformation aims to position Welwitchia University as a leading institution in Namibia and beyond.The university&#039;s chancellor, Professor Scholastika Iipinge, said: "By 2025, I expect us to have laid concrete plans for our internationalisation. This strategy will include cultivating partnerships with leading global institutions, fostering exchange programmes that enrich our academic culture and engaging in collaborative research that addresses global challenges." Monika Pendukeni, council chairperson, emphasised the institution’s aspirations for global recognition. “Our aim is to ensure that Welwitchia University stands as a beacon of knowledge within Namibia and as a luminary of higher education across the world,” she stated.The university&#039;s council is set to table motions for internationalisation and global engagement at its inaugural meeting. This forward-thinking approach underscores Welwitchia University&#039;s commitment to fostering a global academic community and enhancing its research and innovation capabilities.This significant milestone heralds a new era of academic excellence and global impact for Welwitchia University and its community.
