Unesco, Helao Nafidi partner for education
Boosting education
Unesco has donated stationary and water tanks valued at over N$450 000 to benefit learners at five schools in Helao Nafidi.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has partnered with the Helao Nafidi town council and handed over school stationery and water tanks worth N$456 000 to five schools in the town.
Just last month, Unesco celebrated the International Day of Education and called on the Namibian government to "intensify its commitment to providing universal access to education for every learner."
Helao Nafidi mayor Darius Shaalukeni, who welcomed the donations on behalf of the recipients, applauded the Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities, of which Helao Nafidi is a member, for their efforts to assist Namibian learners.
Development
Shaalukeni said Helao Nafidi joined the Unesco Global Network in September 2022 with a vision of lifelong learning to enable residents to emerge from poverty and participate in social, economic and cultural development.
“As Helao Nafidi, we represent Namibia on a world map. I stand here with immense pride as we celebrate this significant step towards educational empowerment for their people, which will undoubtedly impact the lives of countless learners and residents,” he said.
Shaalukeni said education is the cornerstone of progress and development, and the generosity by Unesco will go a long way in uplifting the status of education for the learners in their town.
“Education is the key to unlocking the full potential of learners, and we must not take it for granted. You must take the education of the learners very close to your heart for the benefit of this global network,” he said.
Shaalukeni said the stationery also represents hope and an opportunity for a bright future for the recipients.
Through this donation, he said, Unesco has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no Namibian child, regardless of their background, lacks access to the tools necessary for learning and growth.
