Turkish agency invests over N$800 000 in Pionier Boys' School workshop

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has renovated and donated new equipment to the welding workshop at Pionier Boys' School, with the entire project costing N$860 000.

The official handover of the renovated workshop took place last Thursday.

TIKA country coordinator Ömer Özbey said the project is one of many initiatives they embarked on this year in efforts to tackle Namibia’s high unemployment rate by investing in a skilled and professional workforce for the future.

“One of the most important reasons for high youth unemployment is the lack of a sufficient qualified workforce in the labour market. We believe that institutions like this school will make the biggest contribution to solving this problem,” said Özbey.

He said TIKA is also undertaking a project to renovate a tailoring workshop, library and computer laboratories at the Katutura Multi-Purpose Youth Centre, along with donating new educational machines and equipment.

Contributing to Namibia

Another project in progress is the establishment of a pastry workshop at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.

“I would like to state that we will continue to contribute to the economic and social development of Namibia with the projects we will carry out both in the field of education and in the fields of health, agriculture, animal husbandry, tourism, energy and other topics,” Özbey said.

Khomas governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua said the donation is an investment in the skills, capabilities and careers for the youth.

'This donation is more than just a gift; it is a powerful investment in the skills, capabilities, and futures of the young people in our community,' she said.

Özbey said by the end of the year TIKA will have completed seven projects in total and are planning to add 10 more next year.
