MTC to construct classrooms for N$3.2 million

MTC plans to construct classrooms in three more regions for a total of N$3.2 million through its Rural Schools Project in the coming months.

The Zambezi (N$1 million), Ohangwena (N$1.25 million), and Hardap (N$1 million) regions will benefit.

The Rural Schools Project for these regions is set to start within two weeks.

According to MTC's chief of human capital, Tim Ekandjo, the identified schools in need of additional classrooms are Kahunikwa Primary School, Onduludiya Combined School and Groendraai Primary School.

Upgrades necessary

The selected schools are severely dilapidated, and learners are taught under difficult circumstances.

"We start with the worst school in every region. Then, once construction is complete, we go back to those regions and take the second-worst school," Ekandjo explained.

A video of the Onduludiya Combined School recently went viral. It showed learners being taught during a drenching rainstorm, becoming soaking wet.

The school has 376 learners with 17 teachers and only two blocks of classrooms and five shacks with no running water.

Kahunikwa Primary School principal Masene Nalishebo said the state of the classrooms is not conducive to teaching or learning.

"The new classrooms that will be built by MTC will make a big difference. We will now be able to store books in cupboards instead of boxes. We will give lessons on proper chalkboards rather than boards on tables," she said.

Real difference

To date, the project has made an investment of N$5 million, which has benefitted five schools: Okondaunue Combined School, Omatako Primary School, Zinzongoro Primary School, Onaushe Combined School, and Aussenker Primary School.

The project was launched in 2020, and its objective is to identify and assist rural schools that are in dire need of new infrastructure.
