MTC has handed over a N$1.2 million donation in the form of four newly-constructed classrooms and a storeroom to Groendraai Primary School, situated on a farm 20 km southwest of Rehoboth.

The infrastructure comes at a critical time for learners, as the makeshift classrooms constructed from corrugated iron do not protect learners and staff from extreme weather conditions.

"As a result of MTC's generosity, we now have a total of seven classrooms, one for each grade," school principal Calvin Rickerts said.

"The makeshift structures that were constructed for the learners would often make for a non-conducive environment for learners because it becomes too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter," he said.

Rickerts also explained that the girls' hostel was extended by OM Namibia and that the school is currently in talks to have NamPower construct a boys' hostel with a capacity for 150 learners.

Teamwork

Rickets' gratitude was echoed by members of the community.

Deputy education minister Faustina Caley, who inaugurated the new buildings, said: "It was my conviction that all efforts at the local, regional and international levels insofar as education is concerned cannot be attained in isolation. The government alone will not make it; we need everybody to assist. We require sustained partnerships."

"Therefore, we are appreciative of partners such as MTC who move along with us to mitigate the challenges we face in our education system," she added.

The handover is part of MTC's Rural Schools Project.
