DO NO HARM: Between 1 January and 15 April this year, the SPCA Windhoek received 1 006 animals that fall under the legal definition of cruelty: neglected, abandoned, suffering from untreated injuries or illnesses, or undersocialised and thus fearful or aggressive.According to the animal welfare organisation, the main causes of animal cruelty can vary widely, but some common factors include:Lack of education: Many individuals do not understand proper animal care or the impact of their actions on animals.Financial factors: Financial stress can lead individuals to neglect or abuse animals, especially if they feel unable to provide proper care.Impulse purchases: Acquiring a pet without fully considering the long-term commitment can lead to neglect when the responsibilities become overwhelming.Inadequate research: Failing to understand the specific needs of a pet (such as dietary, exercise and socialisation needs) can result in poor care.Ignoring behavioural issues: Not seeking help for behavioural problems can result in frustration and mistreatment of the animal.Unrealistic expectations: Expecting an animal to behave in ways that are not natural for them can lead to frustration and harmful responses.The SPCA is a registered welfare organisation which aims to prevent cruelty to animals and increase their welfare.
