Camping at school for exams

Ohangwena education director Isak Hamatwi says the directorate has granted a significant number of approvals to allow learners hailing from far-flung communities to camp at school ahead of the upcoming national examinations.

The intervention is common at schools without hostel facilities, and learners are allowed to set up camp under strict supervision by teachers.

The learners are then able to study and also do not arrive late to school, which could result in them missing out on exams.

In an interview with Ewi lyaNooli yesterday, Hamatwi said learners having to walk long distances to school has a negative impact on their performance, especially during exams.

He, however, noted that over the years, a number of schools have been constructed, eliminating the need for learners to walk such long distances.

“We have given a lot of approvals or authorisations for schools to have kids camping at school to write exams, especially for grades nine, 10 and 11 where you do not have the hostels,” Hamatwi said. “We have also done our part as a directorate or as a ministry to ensure that, because nowadays schools in Ohangwena are spread all over, the distances are no longer that excessive.”

Safety

Regarding the safety of learners while camping at school, Hamatwi said they haven’t received reports of any concerning incidents.

“We haven't heard of any incidents of safety having been compromised because the teachers are there to take care of the children and the parents also come in.”

Hamatwi explained that camping is only available to older learners, adding that 90% of learners in primary grades travel from home during exam time.
