Brand-new classrooms bring hope
Providing a better future
The completion of new classrooms was made possible through the joint efforts of MTC and the MVA Fund.
Learners at the Kahunikwa Primary School in the Zambezi Region celebrated a momentous occasion late last week as they bid farewell to mud-built classrooms and welcomed fully furnished, modern structures.
The school received four newly-built classrooms and a storeroom to the tune of N$1.2 million to enhance the learning environment.
The completion and handover of these new classrooms was made possible through the joint efforts of MTC and the MVA Fund, which allocated N$3.2 million in February of this year to construct classrooms at Kahunikwa Primary School, Onduludiya Combined School, and Groendraai Primary School as part of MTC’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative, the MTC Rural School Project.
New beginnings
Kahunikwa Primary School opened in 2015, and learners were either taught in mud structures or tents.
At some point, parents came together to build temporary structures, which were destroyed during a storm.
"In the mud structures, it is very cold during the winter and hot during spring. We cannot thank MTC and the MVA Fund enough, looking at where we come from. This is not only for the learners but for the entire community," school principal Rosenah Masene said.
Learner Maria Shindondola said: "This classroom makes teaching and learning easier. This will uplift our future. With this building, it will make us better future leaders."
Enhancing education
Launched in 2019, the MTC rural schools initiative aims to enhance educational infrastructure by renovating dilapidated schools or constructing new classroom blocks.
Since its inception, the project has successfully built classrooms in various regions, with the latest addition being the Zambezi Region's Kahunikwa Primary School.
MTC has demonstrated its commitment to improving education across Namibia, with plans to hand over more classrooms in Ohangwena Region at the Ondulundiya Combined School in the coming month, bringing the total tally to 41 classrooms constructed through the initiative thus far.
