Workshop highlights media's role in democratic elections
News in short
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) yesterday underscored the critical role media platforms play in democratic elections.
During a media engagement workshop, chief electoral and referenda officer Peter Shaama said the press facilitates not only the freedom to vote, but also fosters a participatory process where voters are well-informed about parties, policies, candidates and the election process.
"I am sure you agree with me that the media are essential instruments for democracy, and a democratic election is impossible without media. A free and fair election is not only about the freedom to vote and the knowledge of how to cast a vote, but also about a participatory process where voters engage in public debate and have adequate information in order to make informed choices," he said.
He further highlighted that comprehensive voter and civic education programmes can only be successful with the media's contribution.
Shaama stressed the importance of professionalism, accuracy and impartiality in media coverage, particularly during the electoral process.
"Considering the crucial electoral activities ahead, our abilities as stakeholders will be tested. We must enable our fellow citizens, with the assistance of the media, to exercise their democratic rights and shape the future of our nation."
