Pensioners lose 20 goats to lightning

In the hot and arid northern regions, rain is often welcomed, but these "showers of blessings" occasionally cause problems and loss.

This was the case when 20 goats were killed by lightning last Thursday in the Oshana Region's Okapya A hamlet.

Seven of the goats belong to Mathias Petrus (96), while the other 13 belong to Frieda Nepando (63), both of whom are pensioners.

Nepando and Petrus both take care of their extended family, and depend on social grants for survival. They said they are struggling to come to terms with the loss.

They described the incident as devastating, adding: “We could at least sell one goat to meet our needs. This is a huge loss because it will be a challenge to sustain our families. Poverty has now become worse".

The pensioners appealed to the public to help them with anything that can improve their standard of living.

Efforts made to get comment from the agriculture ministry proved futile.
