Oshana Region governor Elia Irimari has cautioned parents to look after their children as the region recorded the closure of another school due to the persisting flood.

As the number of people affected by the flood in the region continues to increase, the situation calls for residents to be cautious to avoid any eventualities, he said.

“We need to continue looking out for the children and elders to make sure that not another person succumbs to the flood. We are facing a disaster and should not undermine its underlying risk and impact.”

Irimari extended condolences to the families of two people who died while trying to cross floodwater recently.

This brings the death toll to four.

Drownings

A man, reportedly from Onawa, attempted to make his way home and allegedly drowned in the deep end of a man-made well. His body was retrieved by divers. His name cannot be released as his next of kin have yet to be informed.

Meanwhile, last Saturday, 80-year-old Atanasia Tshirume drowned in a flooded plain at Uudhengelo village in Omagongati after she allegedly went to a cuca shop in the afternoon to buy maize meal.

The two other drowning incidents, recorded in Ohangwena last week, involved two men aged 27 and 47.

Irimari called for effective coordination, concerted efforts and synergy to mitigate the impacts of the flood and to ensure quick recovery.

Relocated

The most recent affected school is Nepaya Primary School in the Eheke circuit, with classes temporarily suspended due to flooding. A gravel road to the school has been damaged, and motorists are cautioned not to use it at all.

The closure will affect 110 learners - 54 boys and 56 girls.

Oshana regional council chairman of the emergency operational and information centre, Jonas Kapenda, said a total of 49 households affected by the flood have so far been relocated to the Ehenye Relocation Centre.

Twenty tents have been erected to accommodate those relocated, he said.
