EU assists with drought relief
NEWS IN SHORT
The European Union (EU) has donated around N$3.8 million for drought relief, aimed at assisting approximately 140 000 Namibians with essential resources such as food, clean water, and financial support.
The donation comes in response to the state of emergency declared by President Nangolo Mbumba. The devastating drought has resulted in widespread crop failures, water shortages and livestock losses.
Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila received the donation and thanked the EU for its generous support.
The Namibian Red Cross Society has been tasked with distributing the EU aid, given its strong community ties and successful track record in the drought-affected regions, including Kavango West, Zambezi, Omusati, Ohangwena, and Kunene.
EU ambassador to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins, said the aim is not only to address Namibia's immediate needs but also to help strengthen the resilience of communities facing severe food insecurity, water shortages and socio-economic disruptions.
