Drought relief: Swapo donates 1 600 grass bales
At a political rally held at Omuthiya on Saturday, Swapo donated 1 600 bales of grass towards the government’s efforts to assist farmers who are affected by the drought.
The handover was done by vice-president and 2024 presidential candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who thanked the members who made the contribution to the party.
According to her, the grass bales were donated by members following President Nangolo Mbumba’s state-of-emergency declaration on the drought a few months ago.
She explained that because Swapo is not mandated to distribute aid to communities, the donation was then handed over to the Office of the Prime Minister. “It is the Swapo comrades who gave us grass. However, as a political party, we don’t distribute drought relief - whether food for people or for livestock - so this grass that we got, we are giving it to the government. There are 1 600 bales of grass. Please make sure they reach the people.”
In July, the government - in a detailed drought relief update to the public - revealed that N$100 million was budgeted for livestock support for the 2024/2025 financial year.
