Cabinet approves N$825 million drought aid
Cabinet last week announced the implementation of the Office of the Prime Minister's N$825 drought relief programme for the 2024–2025 financial year.
Cabinet ratified the estimated budget, which includes N$600 million for food aid, N$100 million each for the livestock support and water supply programmes, as well as N$25 million for seed and fertiliser provision.
This follows an urgent appeal by the agriculture ministry to the Office of the Prime Minister to declare the current drought a national state of emergency.
Emergency assistance
Deputy information and communication technology minister Modestus Amutse said the Office of the Prime Minister has received approval to continue providing food aid to beneficiaries who meet the criteria from 1 July to 30 June 2025.
The livestock support programme includes incentives for livestock marketing and subsidies for pasture rental, transportation to or from grazing areas and the purchase of livestock feed.
It is applicable from 1 April 1 to 31 March next year.
The sale of subsidised feed to farmers through agricultural development centres is valid from 1 July to 31 December.
Cabinet also approved increasing incentives for livestock marketing for large livestock from N$500 to N$750 per head for up to 75 large livestock and for small livestock from N$100 to N$150 for up to 375 small livestock.
