Swakop hosts Namibian Heritage Week celebrations

The official opening ceremony of the annual Namibian Heritage Week took place at the amphitheatre in Swakopmund on 18 September.Erongo Region governor Neville Andre said Heritage Week celebrations deepen the understanding and appreciation of Namibians with regard to their struggles, traditions and contributions to the development of the nation."Heritage Week enables the celebration of Namibia’s rich and diverse heritage, promoting the safeguarding and protection of all cultural heritage in Namibia, irrespective of religious or ethnic identity. The Namibian government is committed to the rich heritage and its role in shaping the nation."Unity Andre highlighted that relevant acts and policies that regulate the sector have been established with institutions such as the National Heritage Council, the Arts Council, and the Museum Association of Namibia, as well as having specialised courses on our heritage in institutions of higher learning contributing towards the development of heritage in the country.The week is being celebrated under the theme &#039;Heritage and Culture: A Rock-Solid Foundation&#039;. It encourages all Namibians to celebrate and commit to protecting the country&#039;s natural and cultural resources. The aim is that every Namibian can participate in some way to celebrate their cultural and natural heritage.The main celebrations will be hosted at the Swakopmund Museum, with numerous activities slated to take place across the country during the week. The Erongo team will be hosting rock painting lessons for kids from Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 and 17:00. A paint and wine evening will follow on Friday at 18:00.Across Namibia The Franco Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) in Windhoek will be exhibiting a tribute to rock art in Namibia on Monday at 18:00. A panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, 20 September at the FNCC cinema. On Friday, a dance show on rock art will be done by the OYO Dance Troupe at the FNCC gallery.The Tsumeb municipality will be hosting Omukwa – Africa’s Tree of Life Mobile Exhibition. A cleaning session of the Batswana Homestead Area will also take place. School learners will receive free tours of the HMK Cultural Village. On Friday, a series of events will include traditional skill demonstrations, cultural performances, and the sale and exhibition of traditional foods and crafts.Oranjemund will be hosting an art competition, an exhibition on the history of diamond mining, as well as a storytelling and bonfire session.
