OTA, NTLA boycott Chiefs' Forum meeting
News in short
The Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) and the Nama Traditional Leaders Association (NTLA) will not attend the meeting of the Chiefs Forum, scheduled to take place in Windhoek today.
The meeting, convened at the behest of vice-president Nangolo Mbumba, will see traditional leaders descend on Windhoek to discuss various issues – although the agenda has not yet been made public.
While OTA decided to boycott the event, it took issue with the invitation of Chief Vipuira Kapuuo to that meeting, saying the move was "misplaced". Kapuuo is considered the chairperson of OTA’s chief’s council, but supporters of Professor Mutjinde Katjiua, who was appointed as paramount chief of the traditional authority, say he no longer holds that role.
OTA and NTLA said they will not attend today’s Chiefs Forum meeting, citing among others, the government’s "celebration" of the joint declaration on the German genocide against Namibian communities. Through that declaration, Germany commits to giving N$18 billion to Namibia over a period of 30 years, a proposition rejected by the affected communities.
