‘Mentally disabled’ suspect allegedly kills sister
Child neglect continues to run rampant in rural communities, with the latest incident being a fatal one. A four-year-old girl was reportedly murdered by her 21-year-old brother - who is allegedly mentally disabled - while their parents were at a cuca shop.
According to a crime report, the incident took place at Okeeke village in the Oshikoto Region’s Omuntele constituency last Thursday.
It is alleged that the deceased, identified as Emilia Frans, was left under the care of the suspect, Tomas Frans, and five minor boys aged two to 10.
“When the grandmother came back home, she discovered that the deceased was not at home,” the police said.
She was told by an elderly man from their neighbourhood - who had come to collect water from their tap - that Tomas and [Emilia] left the house, but did not return.
Two stab wounds
“A search was then started. They did not find her at first, but when they came back to the homestead, they found her lifeless body dumped next to the main entrance,” the report read.
According to the police, the deceased sustained two stab wounds - one between her shoulders and one in her chest.
Her remains were transported to the Omuthiya police mortuary for a postmortem. The suspect fled the scene, but was arrested the same day.
He appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court last Friday and was denied bail.
The incident comes just days after Namibian Sun revealed that between January 2023 and March 2024, almost 70 cases of child neglect were reported to the police.
