Woman stabbed while trying to stop fight

Tuyeimo Haidula
Trying to stop a fight landed a 23-year-old woman in hospital with stab wounds.

The incident took place near a shebeen at Adolf location in Omaalala village on Sunday evening.

The victim sustained serious injuries, but her condition is reported to be stable, according to Oshana Region police spokesperson, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo.

A series of events unfolded over six hours, culminating in the near-fatal incident, he said.

It is alleged that a commotion started between two young women at the shebeen at around 14:00.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the women getting into a confrontation, but did not know how it started, Aiyambo said.

“The two were stopped and asked to leave, but only one left.”

Witnesses said the woman later returned and wanted to continue the confrontation, but again they were stopped and ordered to leave.

Followed

Aiyambo said the woman decided to leave, but asked her friend [the victim] to escort her. As they were crossing the Ondangwa-Ongwediva main road, they saw a young woman and her boyfriend following them.

When the couple caught up with the women, a fight erupted between the two women – who initially had the confrontation - and as the victim attempted to separate them and stop the fighting, she was stabbed by the other woman's boyfriend.

“The stabbed victim had her intestines hanging out,” Aiyambo said of her injuries.

He added that the victim is currently receiving treatment at Oshakati State Hospital, while the female suspect has been arrested and is being detained at the Ongwediva Police Station.

She is expected to appear in Oshakati Magistrate’s Court this week. Aiyambo said the suspect’s boyfriend is still at large and the police are hard at work to find him.

It is further alleged that the accused was carrying a knife and gave it to her boyfriend moments before he allegedly stabbed the victim.
