News in short

A 19-year-old woman sustained multiple injuries after she was caught in gunfire in Witvlei over the weekend.

During a scuffle between a security guard and two men, a number of gunshots were fired, and the woman sustained wounds to her chest, abdomen and right arm, police said.

"It was reported that a security guard saw a man breaking into a truck. The suspect ran away when he saw the guard coming and passed by a group of four people who were walking toward the truck. It is further reported that when the guard asked the group about the suspect, two men from the group confronted the guard, attempting to stab him with knives. The guard fought back and used teargas to ward them off," police said.

The security guard then tried to retreat, but the two men blocked his path. The guard drew his service weapon and fired shots at the ground, causing bullets to strike the victim, who was part of the group.

The woman was admitted to the Gobabis State Hospital in a stable condition, police added.
