Teenage couple behind bars on illegal abortion charges
A 19-year-old Namibian man and an 18-year-old Namibian woman were arrested for their alleged involvement in an abortion attempt in Grootfontein over the weekend.
According to the police, the couple, who were in a relationship, are suspected of conspiring to terminate the woman's pregnancy.
The police reported that the boyfriend provided abortion pills to his girlfriend who was allegedly six months pregnant.
Following the procedure, the girlfriend experienced severe abdominal cramps, which required hospitalisation. She was discharged the following day.
"I cannot confirm whether the abortion was successfully completed or not; however, the mere fact that they bought the pills with the intention to abort is already a crime since abortion is illegal," Namibian Police spokesperson inspector Ramibert Murongo said.
The suspects were expected to appear at the Otjiwarongo Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Deadly domestic fight
A 32-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend for stabbing her ex-boyfriend to death in Omaruru. The police commander for community affairs in the Erongo Region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident, which took place in Omaruru's Sonskyn location.
The deceased was identified as Markus Whayne Ulrich (34). His next of kin have been informed. According to Shapumba, it is alleged that Ulrich came to the suspect's room and started assaulting her. "When she tried to push him out of the room, he allegedly forced himself into the room and assaulted her again. In the process, the suspect took a knife and stabbed him in the neck. He died on the scene".
It was further revealed that they have a child together, but were not residing in the same home. The suspect was arrested and was due to appear in court on Monday.
