Over the weekend, the Namibian Police recorded five deaths by suicide and one attempt. The incidents, which took place all over the country, involved only men.

The youngest victim was 13-year-old Mekondjo Katundu, who died by suicide after being confronted by his parents for watching pornographic videos.

According to the police, Katundu hanged himself last Thursday in Otjomuise in Windhoek after his parents confronted him because he was found “watching porn movies by [his] aunt, who notified his father”.

“Thereafter, the victim hanged himself with a white plastic rope in the kitchen,” the police report read.

At Osona Village near Okahandja, a 22-year-old attempted suicide after an argument erupted between him and his father.

"The parents allegedly tried to resolve the issue, but he went to drink car battery acid. He was admitted to the Okahandja State Hospital in a stable but serious condition. Police are monitoring the matter," police reported.

At Ongwediva’s Onawa village, 25-year-old Oloho Julius Vathina died by suicide after hanging himself with a wire in his room.

“No suicide note was left, and his next of kin have been informed. The body was ferried to the Oshakati police mortuary for a post-mortem. Police investigations continue."

Furthermore, in Ongwediva, the body of a 24-year-old man was found in his room by a friend.

He died by suicide after hanging himself from the window burglar bars with an electric cable.

"A suicide note was found. The deceased was a student at the International University of Management. A post-mortem conducted suggests possible foul play,” the police revealed.

At Oshikuku police station, 30-year-old inmate Ekandjo Festus Kalo died by suicide after “grabbing and taking all his medication during a routine medicine run by officers on Saturday”.

"After he drank all the medicine, he felt sick and he was taken to Oshikuku hospital for treatment. He was admitted in a serious condition, and later died.”

Kalo was awaiting trial on attempted rape, assault by threat and rape charges, police said.
