‘Suffering’ man dies by suicide

Tuyeimo Haidula
A man who had pleaded for public assistance earlier this year to help him overcome his 'suffering' and who had publicly admitted to being suicidal has taken his own life, a police report confirmed.

The police confirmed he died by suicide near Ondangwa's Toivo Ya Toivo Airport last Thursday morning.

Ralf Gunter Damas, a German national who was reportedly married to a Namibian woman, had approached different newspapers to air his plight and his struggles over the past year.

His story first appeared in Informanté newspaper earlier this year, where he was quoted saying suicide was the only option he had left as nobody would listen to him.

New Era publication also spoke to Damas, who had reportedly been homeless and had been accommodated in the psychiatric ward of the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.

Difficult life events

A police report on the suicide states that no suicide note was found and no foul play was suspected.

The media reported that Damas became homeless after his businesses stopped trading at Ondangwa in 2018 or 2019, and his Namibian wife allegedly asked him to move out of their shared home in the Eheke village.

Damas reportedly also lost two vehicles he bought in 2015. One of the vehicles was reportedly repossessed by the bank, while another vehicle was sold. This allegedly led to Damas opening a case against his estranged wife.

He alleged that she had forged his signature to finalise the transaction.

Oshana police regional commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, wrote in a report dated 3 April, that the vehicle was recovered at Ondangwa but was left in the hands of the buyer pending finalisation of the investigation into the matter.

Damas' estranged wife could not comment on the matter when Namibian Sun approached her in July this year. On Sunday, she was still unable to give a statement but confirmed that the police contacted her and informed her about her husband’s death.
