"I left my two younger siblings, then three (girl) and five (boy), at home while I went to the shops late at night with my two female cousins. Suddenly, I received a call from my uncle, who told me that my baby sister had been raped."

This is the testimony of a 19-year-old woman at the Windhoek High Court on Monday in the case where her three-year-old sibling was allegedly brutally raped by Hans Dreyer in Aranos in April 2022. On the night of the alleged incident, the woman had been left to care for her siblings while their mother went out.

Dreyer, or 'Fura' as he was known, had been a long-time neighbour. The family reportedly moved away from the area after the alleged incident.

The 19-year-old told High Court judge Claudia Claasen that her cousins had asked her to accompany them to a nearby shop to buy a few items.

She initially refused, as her siblings were still awake and under her care. However, when they asked again after her siblings had fallen asleep, she agreed to go.

"We were at the shop for quite some time, I must admit. I can't say exactly how long, but it was a while. Later, I received a call from my uncle, urging me to rush back home because my younger sister had been raped."

Horrifying scene

The woman, whose identity cannot be revealed to protect the victim, told the court that when she arrived home, she was informed that her three-year-old sister had already been taken to hospital.

"I rushed to the room where they had been sleeping. I found my brother still asleep, but there was blood everywhere. Upon hearing that she had been raped, I immediately assumed the blood was hers."

The State, through prosecutor Loretha Muvangua, has charged Dreyer with housebreaking with intent to rape and rape.

It is alleged that he broke into the home of the family before violently attacking the child.

Dreyer, represented by Cliff Simataa, has pleaded not guilty. Court proceedings were set to continue on Tuesday.
