Shorts: Usakos mass murder accused remanded in custody
The 17-year-old boy accused of the brutal murder of six family members in Usakos was remanded in custody following a brief appearance in the Usakos Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The accused, whose identity remains withheld as he is legally still a minor under Namibian law, was denied bail. The case has been postponed to 28 May to allow for further police investigations. He is expected to turn 18 on 18 April, and will be considered an adult by the time of his next court appearance.
He faces multiple counts of murder and a charge of defeating the course of justice in connection with the killings, which took place on Saturday morning in the Hakaseb location of Usakos. The incident has shocked the nation and prompted a response from the highest levels of government.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, speaking on behalf of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during a courtesy visit to Namport in Walvis Bay on Monday, expressed the government’s condolences and deep concern over the tragic events.
“The President has asked us to go past Usakos... after the tragedy that occurred, where six family members were mowed down by a young person,” said Ngurare. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and pray for them.”
