SA fugitive nabbed in Namibia

News in short
STAFF REPORTER
The Namibian Police on Saturday arrested a 58-year-old South African national who has been on the run since 2011. He was convicted on 210 fraud charges and was sentenced to six years in jail, but never showed up to serve his sentence.

He arrived in Namibia on Saturday from Angola and a scan of passport showed that he is on the Interpol wanted list.

“Further records alleged that the man defrauded his employer over a period and stole funds to the value of thousands of rands. He was prosecuted in the George Regional Court, and on 22 August 2003, he was convicted on 210 counts of fraud and sentenced to six years imprisonment. The subject then lodged an appeal against the conviction, but the appeal was struck off the court roll.

"He was instructed to serve the sentence, but failed to report to prison. Currently, the fugitive is detained at Seeis police station... and will appear in court today while awaiting administrative aspects from the South African authorities,” a police report read.
