Rundu cop arrested for allegedly setting man alight
Accused denied bail
The victim, Munango Daniel (35), was admitted to the Rundu State Hospital after sustaining serious burns to 20% of his body.
A 30-year-old Rundu police constable was arrested for attempted murder after he allegedly threw petrol at a 35-year-old victim and set him alight with a match.
The accused, Mpo Gift Shakanda, appeared before magistrate Sonia Samupofu last week and was denied bail.
The matter has been postponed to 9 January 2023 for further police investigations.
The incident took place on Friday, 30 September, at a local shebeen in Rundu’s Ndama informal settlement.
The victim, Munango Daniel (35), was admitted to the Rundu State Hospital after sustaining serious burns to 20% of his body.
According to a nurse, he suffered burns to mostly his head and upper body, but is responding well to treatment.
The victim, a Ndama resident, was not willing to speak to the media at the time of going to print, saying he was still in pain.
What actually happened?
Details remain sketchy; however, Namibian Sun understands the incident took place around 21:00 when the victim tried to stop a fight from erupting.
According to eye witnesses, Shakanda was involved in an argument with Munango’s friend outside the shebeen.
The victim allegedly intervened as he could see the argument was getting heated.
It is further alleged the suspect disappeared from the shebeen and returned minutes later with a plate containing petrol. He had reportedly gone home and siphoned the petrol from a generator.
When he returned to the shebeen, Shakanda placed the plate in a vehicle parked at the shebeen.
Witnesses said Munango was going to the toilet when the suspect threw the petrol on him.
Despite Shakanda being the only suspect at the moment, it is alleged someone else lit the match and threw it on Munango, who immediately went up in flames.
Shakanda and his friends fled the scene.
Shebeen patrons helped to put out the fire with sand.
The accused was only arrested last Monday.
