Replica AK-47 stunt at Nujoma’s airport arrival ends in arrest
A 43-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after allegedly brandishing a hand-made object closely resembling an AK-47 assault rifle during the arrival of the late founding president, Sam Nujoma, at Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Airport in Ondangwa.
The suspect was standing among a crowd of onlookers on the C46 road, opposite the airport.
Oshana crime investigations coordinator Deputy Commissioner Frederick Ndjadila said the man raised the replica weapon in the direction of the vehicles assembled to lead Nujoma’s memorial motorcade.
“The act was witnessed by operation members of Ondangwa Police Station, who quickly ran and seized the weapon from the hands of the suspect. Upon inspection it was discovered that the instrument was a metal object that was welded and manufactured to closely resemble a real AK-47 assault rifle,” Ndjadila explained.
He said the man was nevertheless arrested immediately and is currently detained.
Ndjadila said the man, whose name has not yet been released, has been charged with the unauthorised manufacture of arms and possession of arms without a licence. He is expected to appear in court this week.
The weapon has been confiscated and logged as police evidence.
It is unclear at this time whether the homemade AK-47 is a non-functional imitation of a real firearm or has lethal capabilities.
