Rapist wants to appeal 45-year sentence
Convicted of murder, rape, housebreaking
After stabbing a woman about seven times, Axarob Basson raped her and then left her for dead.
A man who stabbed a woman seven times in her back, raped her and left her for dead in 2010 now wants to appeal his 45-year prison sentence.
Axarob Basson (58) was a farmworker in the Mariental vicinity when he was arrested. He pleaded guilty in the Windhoek High Court to murder, rape and housebreaking charges.
Judge Naomi Shivute sentenced Basson to an effective 45 years in prison - 30 years for murder and 15 years for rape and housebreaking with intent to rape.
According to his conviction at the time, he knew the deceased - Susanna Suzette Slinger (20) - and was with her in the farmhouse on the night she was murdered. He made sexual advances towards her, which she rejected. He left the house, but later returned.
"He took off his clothes so as not to be seen in the dark.” According to court documents, Basson climbed through an open window while the deceased was sleeping. He then walked up to her bedroom door, but it was locked.
The deceased woke up due to the noise and left her room to see what was going on. During that time, Basson reportedly hid in the kitchen.
"When the deceased approached him, he took out a knife and stabbed her about seven times in her back. The deceased fell down and bled profusely. The accused started raping her, and when he was done, he left her to die. He then went into the bushes where he spent a few nights before being arrested," the ruling read.
Basson appeared before Shivute in the Windhoek High Court on Monday for his application for leave to appeal his sentencing in the Supreme Court.
