Oshana robbers target students

Tuyeimo Haidula
The police in Oshana Region are cautioning the public, particularly students who have fallen prey to robbers, to be careful when returning home from classes.

This comes after a student at I-Care in Ondangwa was allegedly kidnapped and robbed of more than N$12 000 in the Ekuku area on Friday. The incident occurred between 13:00 and 14:00.

The police reported that the 25-year-old female student took a taxi with two male passengers in it.

After robbing her of N$7 300 in cash, the robbers threatened her and demanded N$5 000 from the victim’s mother and aunt, who sent the money via e-wallet.

Trapped in taxi

It is alleged that at one point, the taxi picked up another man who sat in the front seat with the driver. Subsequently, the taxi veered off the main road towards Omumbu in the water pan. While the taxi was being driven, the front-seat passenger allegedly grabbed the victim's handbag and her cell phone.

The suspect reportedly demanded more money from the victim, and after failing to extort more money from her, he dropped her off at Omayanga village, where she took another taxi from the Okatana fuel station to Oshakati.

“The taxi in this case was a black Nissan March with an Oshakati registration number, but the number plate was not captured during the incident. The victim was robbed of items, including a Samsung smartphone A30, house keys, and cash amounting to N$7 300,” police reported.

No arrests have taken place yet, and no recoveries of the stolen money or items have been made.
