Oshana cops issue warning to rogue holidaymakers

'Be warned'

Oshana regional police commander Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria has warned residents and visitors to abide by the country's laws, saying there will be no mercy for offenders and they will be thrown in jail "in the blink of an eye."

Those found breaking the law “will sleep in jail," he said.

"Be warned. Sometimes we tell people rules, and they think we are joking. The police are not here to play; we have to ensure the safety of our people," he added.

He was speaking on Thursday at a police festive season operation and road safety campaign at the Oshiko road block in Ongwediva.

The regional commander said it is unfortunate that some residents and visitors to the region intend to commit crimes, but said the police will remain vigilant to combat illegal activities.

“We should not give them an opportunity, and we can achieve that objective if we are properly organised,” he said.

Support enterprises

Sakaria said during the festive season, Oshakati, Ongwediva and Ondangwa become overcrowded, with many returning home from all corners of the country to spend Christmas with their families.

This influx is positive, he said, as it provides a much-needed economic boost to the region.

Sakaria said the police encourage people to sell goods to earn money, but it should be done in line with the country's laws.

“I must also be clear that to demonstrate our commitment to the growth of the local economy, we shall allow our liquor outlets to conduct business only as per their trading licences; we have made enough enquiries into the Liquor Act, and it does not indiscriminately prevent trading of liquor on public holidays, unless it is indicated in your licence,” he said.

The festive season safety operation started on 17 November and will run until 17 December, but Sakaria said the police presence will be felt beyond Christmas.
