Ohangwena police warn farmers of livestock theft

Ohangwena police have warned farmers about a rise in livestock theft in villages near Eenhana, noting that cattle are being stolen on an almost daily basis.Ohangwena police spokesperson Sergeant Andrew Nghiyolwa said the police recently met with local livestock farmers and town council officials to discuss ways to prevent and fight livestock theft.He said the cattle are covertly loaded onto trucks and transported to unknown destinations."Livestock theft has increased drastically in and around Eenhana town. Cases are reported almost daily in the villages on the outskirts of the town," he said.He added that with police working around the clock to address the issue, some of the stolen cattle have been recovered.However, others remain missing, putting a serious strain on farmers&#039; herds.“Goats are also stolen at night, slaughtered and the carcasses carried away in containers to be sold cheaply to town inhabitants who are already known for selling raw meat and/or okapana,” Nghiyolwa said.He urged residents of the Ohangwena Region, especially those in Eenhana and surrounding areas, to alert the police to any suspicious activity or anyone seen herding cattle that do not belong to them.
