Ohangwena man arrested for killing uncle with panga
A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly hacking his 94-year-old uncle to death and injuring his 17-year-old cousin with an arrow at Onekwaya West in the Ohangwena Region on Monday.
Warrant Officer Andrew Nghiyolwa of the Ohangwena community policing sub-division said the suspect has been charged with murder, read with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act 4 of 2003, attempted murder under the same provisions, and malicious damage to state property.
Nghiyolwa said the suspect allegedly accused his uncle and his cousin of poisoning him with pork, which they reportedly served him on Sunday.
“As a result, the suspect shot his cousin with an arrow in the head. He sustained a serious injury – a deep cut. The boy and his uncle ran into the mahangu field in order to hide; however, the suspect got hold of the deceased (his uncle) and hacked him [multiple times] on the head with a panga until he died on the spot,” Nghiyolwa said.
Deadly chase
The deceased, who has been identified as Josua Kirus, sustained multiple head and facial injuries.
Nghiyolwa said the young survivor – Kirus Nghishonwa – ran to Onekwaya State Clinic for help, with the suspect allegedly close behind. The suspect reportedly shattered the clinic's glass windows in an attempt to force his way in after clinic staff had locked the doors.
Eventually, the suspect returned home.
Nghishonwa is currently receiving treatment at Oshakati State Hospital for serious head injuries.
