The Namibian Police are investigating the abandonment of a newborn baby boy who was found alone and crying in a riverbed in Grootfontein over the weekend.

According to the police, the infant – estimated to be just three to four days old – was discovered in a riverbed near a railway line, wrapped in a small white blanket. A passerby heard the baby crying and alerted authorities.

The baby is now in stable condition at a state hospital. Police have opened a case of child neglect and investigations continue.

The weekend crime report issued by the police highlighted a spate of housebreaking and theft incidents across several regions.

In Windhoek, two cases of break-ins were reported in Dorado Park and Sauer Burch Street, during which valuables including iPhones, laptops and cash, totalling more than N$138 500, were reported stolen. Meanwhile, in Outjo, suspects targeted a butchery, stealing meat products worth N$16 300.

Police arrested two suspects and recovered some of the stolen items, the police reported.

In addition, during a theft at a residence in Otjomuise, goods valued at N$101 200 were stolen.

Other thefts were reported in Omahenene and Onawa, where valuables, including cash and auto parts, were taken, totalling over N$150 000.

Moreover, in Bunya and Oshakati, stock thefts were reported, with suspects apprehended in one case, the police said.

A particularly notable case involved a stolen and slaughtered ox and expectant cow valued at N$32 000.

Deadly encounters

The weekend also saw a spate of violent crimes reported to the police.

In Rosh Pinah, a 40-year-old man was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a 45-year-old suspect, who was arrested at the scene.

In Keetmanshoop, an 18-year-old man died from a fatal stab wound sustained during a dispute. The suspect was apprehended in what was believed to be a gang-related incident, the police said.

Police in Rehoboth are investigating two separate murders, one involving a 65-year-old victim who died after being punched and another where a 26-year-old man was fatally stabbed.

The suspects in both cases are known but remain at large, the police noted.

In Groot-Aub, a man was reportedly stabbed to death by his girlfriend during an argument at a farm. The suspect is currently in custody.

Natural disasters added to the weekend’s tragedies. In Kavango-West, two boys were killed and three others injured, during a lightning strike. Similarly, in Angola, two Namibians reportedly died while 13 others were injured in a lightning strike.

Drownings in Bunya and Okangwati claimed the lives of two boys aged eight and nine, the police reported.

Other notable incidents included a fire at the Grand Canyon Spur building in Windhoek, where no fatalities were reported, and an escape from custody in Gobabis, where two suspects fled police cells, with one still at large.
