Namdia debacle: Shololo in court today
The second suspect in the Namdia diamond heist, former soldier Sam Shololo, is expected to make his maiden appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court today.
Like his co-accused Joel Angula, who appeared in court last week, Shololo faces charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Shololo spent days in the Katutura State Hospital after being injured during a robbery at Namdia, the state-owned diamond marketing company.
Police yesterday confirmed he was discharged from hospital on 21 January and is scheduled to appear in court today.
Additionally, Angula will return to court today on the charge of illegal possession of diamonds.
Two men, Namdia security supervisor Francis Eiseb, and suspected robber Max Endala – who is Angula’s cousin – died as a result of events that unfolded during the robbery.
Namibian Sun understands that 446 diamond parcels remain missing after the robbery, while 13 were allegedly found in Angula’s house.
Investigation still underway
Initial police reports had suggested that four external suspects, excluding Angula, were involved in the robbery and that two of them fled with diamonds worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Preliminary investigations have now discounted that version, finding that only Shololo, Angula and Endjala were on site during the robbery.
Police have begun investigating the possibility that some of their own officers or private security guards, who were the first responders to the robbery, might have allegedly played a role in the missing 446 diamond parcels.
