Murder suspect arrested after tip-off
Village elders make ‘citizen’s arrest’
Anna Maria Cuka Ncashe's body was discovered with severe facial injuries inflicted by a sharp object.
A 40-year-old man who reportedly brutally murdered his girlfriend and fled the scene was arrested yesterday after a tip-off from community members at Koro village in the Kavango East Region.
Namibian Police acting regional commander Deputy Commissioner Eino Nambahu confirmed the murder, which took place last Friday around 17:30 at Zaidag village. The deceased, Anna Maria Cuka Ncashe (39), was discovered with severe facial injuries inflicted by a sharp object suspected to be a traditional axe. Her next of kin were informed.
“Upon receiving the tip-off, the police regional crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, mobilised members from Jashipe border post and Ndiyona Police Station, who responded promptly and effected the arrest. The suspect was found in the custody of the headman and other village elders at Koro village and was handed over to the police,” he said.
“The suspect confessed to attacking his girlfriend with an axe, striking her on the forehead and abandoning her lifeless body before fleeing the scene. Ncashe was discovered by her brother who had come to visit the two.”
Nambahu extended gratitude to the headman and members of the community for their commendable job and support in combatting crime. “The community serves as the eyes and ears of the police. Therefore, I encourage citizens to stand their ground and report any crime observed in society. Crime can only be reduced if the police and the community work together,” he said.
"Building partnerships with the communities is one of our organisational pillars in the effort to combat crime. Other villages should follow the good example of Mr Kamberuka and his villagers, who did not hesitate to call the police,” he said.
