Man refusing to leave wedding kills another
A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death on Friday at Ohaiyanda village in the Oshikoto Region, allegedly by another man who refused to leave a wedding.
The incident happened at around 20:00 when Nesto Hafeni Jeremia was stabbed with a knife in his left shoulder after he was attempting to inform a group of young people to leave a wedding venue and return to their homes. “It is alleged that there was a wedding ceremony in the village. After the ceremony, the deceased was instructed to inform all the young people to leave the place and go to their houses since it was getting late,” a preliminary police report read.
“It is further alleged that the suspect refused to comply with the instructions, whereby the deceased allegedly used his belt to beat him to force him to leave the house. The suspect drew a knife, stabbed the deceased and ran away in the darkness.”
Jeremia died upon arrival at the Omithiya State Hospital. The suspect was arrested and police investigations continue.
Brutal murder
This comes a little more than a month after Namibian Sun reported on the brutal murder of a 34-year-old woman whose body was found in a pool of blood on 17 August at Ondera Farm, where she had been attending a wedding.
According to the police, the victim - Petrika Axurus - had travelled to Wells Post, situated in the Quinas constituency, with her two children and a cousin.
The police reported that in the early morning hours of 17 August, a man went outside to relieve himself in the bush. While there, he discovered a pair of sandals and marks that looked like someone had been dragged across the ground. “The witness followed where the person was dragged and he saw a naked body lying a few metres ahead. He immediately went back in the house to inform people of his discovery and they alerted the police.”
Police said current evidence suggests that Axurus was likely raped before she was killed. A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime.
Community policing
When contacted yesterday, Oshikoto police commander Theopolina Kalompo-Nashikaku urged private event organisers to make use of the community policing unit known as the Men and Women Network.
She was responding to a Namibian Sun inquiry on whether private event organisers can rope in the services of the police at functions that gather thousands of people.
Events such as weddings and funerals can attract large crowds, which includes strangers who may not have the purest intentions.
“It is a matter of concern that this [murder] happened and [criminal] acts are happening at private gatherings. What I can advise the public is that we have another arm that we call the Men and Women Network, which is always gathering to fight crime at [village level],” she said.
