Man on the run after alleged rape of niece with Down syndrome
Ohangwena police have launched an investigation into the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome by her 42-year-old uncle.
The suspect is on the run and efforts to arrest him are underway, police said yesterday.
Ohangwena crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Melanie Mbuuru, said the sexual attack reportedly took place occurred around 22:00 at Ohadiwa village, Onamukulo district, on Friday.
"The suspect allegedly lured the victim into his sleeping room and raped her," Mbuuru explained.
She said the woman lives with Down syndrome and is unable to consent to sexual acts.
Mbuuru said a case has been opened on behalf of the woman by the State.

In a separate incident reported to the police recently, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her uncle in August 2024 at an unknown date and time at Onekuta village in the Eenhana district.
Mbuuru said it is alleged that the suspect called his niece to his room, locked the door, forced her to undress herself and raped her.
“It is further reported that the incident happened during the school holidays when the girl went to visit her grandmother,” she said.
It remains unclear why the rape was only reported to the police this year, while it reportedly happened last year.
The suspect has not yet been arrested.
