Man arrested for raping and impregnating minor
A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl in Sigone village, Kavango West.
Kavango West police chief inspector Raimbert Muronga confirmed the incident on Friday, stating that the alleged crime occurred in August last year around midnight.
According to Muronga, the suspect reportedly threatened the victim with a sharp object before forcibly dragging her into his room.
"He threw her onto the bed and sexually assaulted her against her will. Throughout the ordeal, he continued to threaten her with harm if she screamed or disclosed the incident to anyone," Muronga said.
The victim disclosed that she was coerced into non-consensual intercourse and later discovered she was pregnant as a result. "She missed her period in September 2024, and a pregnancy test conducted at a hospital on January 27, 2025, confirmed the pregnancy. The victim has since been referred to social services for further support," Muronga added.
Authorities have taken the suspect into custody, and further investigations are underway. Muronga emphasized that the police remain committed to ensuring justice for the victim and urged community members to report any cases of gender-based violence to law enforcement.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges in addressing sexual violence and protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly minors. Community leaders and organizations continue to call for stronger measures to prevent such crimes and support survivors.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the alleged crime.
