#JustIn: Murder accused denied bail

Nikanor Nangolo
Ruben Montgomery (57), who stands accused of murder and attempted murder, was denied bail after making his first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Montgomery appeared before magistrate John Sindano, who postponed the case to 13 April for further investigations. He informed the accused of his rights to obtain legal representation, apply for legal aid, or represent himself. Montgomery indicated that he understood the explanation and elected private representation.

The accused was denied bail on grounds that it is not in the interest of the public and that the accused may interfere with the ongoing police investigation.

According to an incident report provided by the police, an argument allegedly broke out between the suspect and his sister-in-law (his brother's wife). She told the suspect to take his belongings and leave her premises. The suspect allegedly left and then returned with a sharp object (knife) hidden under his clothes. He stabbed his in-law on her right forearm and another woman, Hester Maria van Zyl, in the chest and on the hand when she tried to push him out of the room. The victims managed to lock the door but the suspect broke it open and continued stabbing them multiple times.

Van Zyl sustained serious injuries and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The sister-in-law also sustained serious injuries and was taken to Walvis Bay State Hospital where she was admitted and was being prepared to be transferred to Windhoek hospital for further treatment. - [email protected]
