Man refuses to accept relationship's over
The 45-year-old woman was at work at the time of the incident.
A man allegedly set his girlfriend’s house on fire in a fit of rage on Monday.
The incident took place at Oshifo in the Omusati Region’s Ruacana constituency.
According to the police, the suspect was reportedly angry when the victim ended their relationship. When he refused to accept it, she applied for a protection order against him, which led to him setting her house on fire.
The 45-year-old woman was at work at the time of the incident. The suspect’s age is unknown, as he has yet to be formally charged.
Suspect arrested
Omusati police crime investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Moses Simaho, said the suspect fled after committing the crime and was arrested on Tuesday morning.
He is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard, Simaho added.
The police said the suspect, who lives in Ondangwa, allegedly hitchhiked to the victim’s home at around 10:00 and set it on fire.
“The man bought a five-litre container of petrol at the service station. That is what he used to set the house on fire,” Simaho said.
The fire caused damage to a fridge valued at N$8 000, a TV worth N$3 000 and a couch set valued at N$30 000. Other items damaged in the fire include an electricity box, the ceiling, light bulbs and a cupboard. The value of these items has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, clothes, a bed and bedsheets, a microwave, a washing machine, a DStv decoder, handbags, fans and electric cables were also ruined in the blaze – valued at approximately N$70 700.
Man murders girlfriend
In a separate incident, police in the Khomas Region reported a case of murder in Havana in Windhoek on Monday afternoon.
The suspect, a 41-year-old man, allegedly stabbed his girlfriend three times in the back with a kitchen knife.
The victim, identified as Selestine Nuusiku Shilongo (41), succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead by paramedics.
According to the police, the relationship between the suspect and Shilongo was characterised by violence.
The suspected murder weapon was recovered, and the suspect was arrested. He is expected to appear in court this week.
