Hardap reports reduction in rape cases

In a surprising and encouraging turn of events, the Hardap Region has seen a remarkable decline in the number of reported rape cases over the past financial year. According to official statistics, the region recorded a staggering drop from 380 cases in the 2021/22 financial year to a mere 48 in the 2022/23 financial year.“Thank you, gentlemen of Hardap Region, for coming to your senses. We encourage you to please refrain. We do not want to have any number of cases by next year,” governor Salomon April said during his state of the region address.However, despite this decline, rape remains amongst the top three crimes plaguing the region.During the period under review, stock theft topped the list with 292 reported cases, followed by 100 cases of possession and/or dealing of prohibited substances and 48 cases of rape.N$4.7m in drugs“Regrettably, we are seeing an increase in the amount of drugs confiscated in the current financial year in the Hardap Region, as we have confiscated drugs worth N$4.7 million. This is a significant increase compared to the N$402 740 worth of drugs that were confiscated in the 2021/2022 financial year,” April said.The confiscated drugs include 31.5 kilograms of cannabis worth N$336 440; 40.5 kg of skunk worth N$3.8 million; 4 638 mandrax tablets worth N$573 430, and 37 units of crack cocaine valued at N$5 000.The governor went on to add that crime in the region has increased by 4.7%, with Rehoboth topping the list as the town with the most reported crimes.“The Hardap Region has a total of 13 police stations, and at these police stations, a total of 4 730 crimes have been reported in the current financial year, with 2 378 of the cases having been reported in Rehoboth. “The least number of cases were recorded in Sesriem,” he said.
